SIRIM MCMC Type Approval Explained

MCMC type approval is the mandatory certification required by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia, or SKMM) for any communications equipment sold, used, imported, or distributed in Malaysia.

The certification is issued through SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. — the Certifying Agency (CA) appointed by MCMC to evaluate and approve applications. This is why the process is often called "SIRIM certification" or "SIRIM MCMC approval" interchangeably — the standard is set by MCMC, but the certificate is issued by SIRIM QAS.

The requirement is set out in Section 165 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and enforced through the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000.

In practice, any device operating on regulated radio frequencies — from a simple Bluetooth speaker to an industrial IoT gateway — needs a SIRIM MCMC certificate and the corresponding SIRIM-MCMC label (minimum 8mm × 8mm) before it can legally enter the Malaysian market.

Selling or importing non-certified equipment carries penalties including product seizure, fines, and — in serious cases — imprisonment under the Act.
